This new collection of hand-dyed colors evolved as we emerged from Covid, and life handed me a few more lemons to digest. In July 2022, my only daughter Ona moved to Los Angeles and my mother Bernadette entered hospice care.
After six months of sitting with sadness and missing them both, I decided to visit Ona in January 2023. For nine days we stayed at a lovely Airbnb, visited museums and galleries, took architectural tours, hiked in nature, shopped at resale stores, and treated ourselves to wonderful variety of vegan restaurants.
As we toured LA, I marveled at how lush and green the eucalyptus trees and giant succulent plants were. Lemon and orange tree branches hung over the sidewalks, asking to be picked and enjoyed. From that point on, lemons took on a new meaning for me. They reminded me that change is inevitable, but joy surrounds us – we just need to recognize it.
I realized after all that I had not lost my daughter or my mother, they simply moved on to the next phase in this cycle we call life.
